Forkash serves=20 homeless, needy

As program director for Shelter Outreach Plus = in=20 Marina, Linda Forkash supervises four programs, the = two I-HELP=20 programs that serve homeless men in Salinas and on the = Monterey Peninsula, the emergency family unit and the = Mobile=20 Outreach Services Team, MOST, a street outreach = program. She=20 has been with the agency 10 years.

"We go out with a van and distribute blankets, = food and=20 clothing," Forkash said.

Her Good Samaritan efforts started in 1992 with = a=20 homeless man she saw sitting on a bench each day.

"I woke up at night worrying about him and = whether he=20 was cold or had food," she said. "I started cooking = for him in=20 my home and bringing him blankets and huge platters of = food. I=20 really enjoyed working hands-on with folks, so they = created a=20 position for me at Shelter Outreach Plus."

Shelter Outreach Plus works closely with other=20 agencies, interim programs, veteran's services, Sun = Street and=20 the Salvation Army.

"We all work together," Forkash said. "That's = why it=20 works. It truly takes the community."

Forkash has two sons and a grandchild.

"My life away from work is my family," she = said.
